About the Artist
Mikaella Zlobina is a Russian-born painter whose journey has taken her from the cultural heart of Lyon, France, to the vibrant city of Houston. Her work bridges European artistic heritage with a modern sensibility, blending classical craft with contemporary vision. Each canvas speaks to her roots while embracing the new perspectives she continues to discover in Houston, offering viewers a dialogue between tradition, movement, and reinvention.

Act III Houston: Wild Garden
The current exhibition, Wild Garden, invites viewers into a dreamlike dialogue between nature and imagination. This third act in Mikaella Zlobina’s ongoing body of work intertwines flora and fauna, where delicate blossoms meet the intricate forms of insects, echoing both fragility and resilience. Inspired by 18th-century embroidery motifs yet reimagined through contemporary brushwork, the series transforms the gallery into a living garden — untamed, vibrant, and profoundly poetic.

Oil and mixed media on canvas
By Mikaella Zlobina
This work was created in Houston, Texas, as part of Mikaella Zlobina’s ongoing exploration of botanical abstraction, texture, and emotional symbolism through layered oil painting techniques. The composition combines deep blue floral forms with raised gold elements, creating a contrast between fragility and permanence. The painting was executed using heavy impasto techniques and mixed media applications, emphasizing tactile surface, movement, and light interaction. Inspired by the relationship between nature and ornamentation, the work reflects influences from both European decorative traditions and contemporary abstract expressionism. The artist’s practice is informed by her background in academic art studies in Moscow and her multicultural experience living across Europe and the United States. This piece belongs to a continuing body of work investigating flora as an emotional and symbolic language.
